Worcestershire Sauce recipe change alert!

I discovered a huge product recipe change while shopping for a familiar ingredient to make one of my favorite dishes – Lentil Shepherds Pie, from ‘The cake the Buddha ate’ Recipe book – from the BRC.

The Colman’s Holbrooks Worcestershire Sauce has changed and it is not necessarily for the better.

Ingredient comparisons

ORIGINAL – *top one*:  water, vinegar, molasses, cane sugar, salt, spices, colourant(e150a), tamarind extract, lemon oil, flavouring.
Allergens: fish.

Total: 10 (1 x E-number)

NEW RECIPE – *bottom one*: water, vinegar, molasses, salt (non iodated), monosodium glutamate (flavour enhancer), cane sugar, spices (irradiated), colourant(e150a), flavouring, tamarind extract, stabaliser(e415), mannitol(E421)

Total: 12 (3 x E-numbers)

Nutritional comparisons

ORIGINAL – *Top one* per 5 g serving:
Energy – 10kJ
Protein – 0.1g
Total sugar – 0.5g 
Total fat – 0g
Salt – 0.1g

NEW RECIPE – *Bottom one* per 5g serving:
Energy – 12kJ
Sugars – 0.4g
Fat – <0.1g
Saturates – <0.1g
Salt – 0.1g

Product comparison review summary

NEW PRODUCT opinion – I am unable to find one real pro to this change.

Packaging:

The packaging change from plastic to glass is admirable in terms of environmental care, but a complete disaster for retailer merchandisers and customers with tiled floors and accident prone!

Product ingredients:

The ingredient change makes for an entirely new product all together.

Added MSG – why?

Per 5g serving…

Reduced sugar by 0.1g BUT

Added fat with increased Total fat from 0 to 0.1g

No more Protein

Now with added stabilizer and mannitol*

* a note on mannitol – Mannitol is a type of sugar alcohol which is also used as a medication. As a sugar, it is often used as a sweetener in diabetic food, as it is poorly absorbed from the intestine.

Why this product needs added Mannitol is beyond weird to me!

Ingredients went from 10 to 12 with 3 E-number ingredients on the NEW vs. 1 in the ORIGINAL. Not cool.

If you have a fish allergy or are vegan or vegetarian, then the new recipe with added junk ingredients may be for you.

Essentially the new recipe is a new product with a whole new flavour profile. Do not expect the same product taste when or if you buy this brand again.

I have officially stopped buying this product and will share my new replacement product soon – ps. it’s super delicious and far more nutritious with healthier ingredients 🙂

HINT: It’s made in the cape – in Worcester and all sauces are suitable for vegetarians and have no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. No added MSG and are gluten free.

  1. I have stumbled here due to my absolute hatred of the new Holbrooks Worcestershire sauce and my epic battle to fight Tiger Brands and find a proper replacement.
    Hope you had better luck than me finding a replacement.

    1. Totally agree!! I luckily did find a MUCH better alternative – Mrs JL Halls… made in Worcester and the company is still run by the original product developer! My favourite is the smoked Worcestershire sauce, which is made using real smoke 😃 I’ve noticed Woolies also has a ‘cleaner’ label Worcestershire sauce but I haven’t tried it yet.
